Research Interests

  • Debbie Mari is a singer, pianist, educator, vocal coach and community music practitioner who lives and works in Durban. My research interests and my thinking have been shaped by my experience as a musician and educator in both Basic and Higher Education in KwaZulu-Natal. Apart - yet intertwined - from Jazz Studies, I have developed an interest in the role of community music in music education and the development of alternative methods and approaches to music learning i.e the role of Music Education other than for the preparation of virtuoso musicians, which indeed has its place. I am the Chairperson of the Board of the UKUSA Arts Programme – one of Durban’s longest running community Music projects offering Saturday Music classes to emerging musicians for over 25 years and Deputy Chairperson of KUMISA (KwaZulu-Natal United Music Industry Association). I have enjoyed local and international collaborations, in various live music settings, as a jazz singer, who enjoys selections from the American Songbook as well as original compositions which I recorded with Darius Brubeck (Before It’s Too Late, title track), George Mari (Since I Met You) and Richard Walne (The Only One Around, title track).
