Soweto-born novelist Mr Niq Mhlongo has completed a stint as the first Artist-in-Residency at UKZN’s School of Arts.
Closer to Home by UKZN Jazz lecturer Mr Sibusiso Mashiloane has been nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA) in the category Best Jazz Album.

Fine Arts student Ms Georgina Calder recently held an exhibition, titled Arranging Retrieved Memories at the Jack Heath Gallery in Pietermaritzburg. Calder’s work is shaped around her memories of her childhood in the city. She uses the weaver’s nest to serve as a metaphor for her memories.
Dr Lolie Makhubu-Badenhorst of the African Languages and Linguistics Cluster in the School of Arts is the head of the recently established KwaZulu-Natal Chapter of the South African Translators’ Institute (SATI).
Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Humanities Professor Nhlanhla Mkhize and academics Professors Ernest Khalema, Maheshvari Naidu, Nobuhle Hlongwa and Nogwaja Zulu recently met with Dr Saleem Badat of the Andrew W Mellon Foundation to discuss their research projects that were made possible through funding from the Foundation.
Mr Eloff Pretorius received a Master of Fine Arts for his innovations in non-toxic materials for intaglio etching. His ground-breaking research found that metal salt etchants are a safe alternative to strong acid etchants. It also proposed that cleaning solvents be replaced by vegetable oil, and that acrylic mediums be used instead of rosin dust and bitumen.
Ms Hazel Ncube, daughter of MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Mrs Nomusa Dube-Ncube, graduated with her Bachelor of Arts Honours degree.
Up-and-coming Hip Hop artist Mr Bongani Ndimande graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree. He is passionate about music, having started his musical journey three years ago.
